Pewley Down

TG have been asked by the owners (based in London) of a large piece of land on Pewley Down to help with gathering ideas on maintaining the land in an environmentally sustainable way. Early in March, TG members met with the owners and Surrey Wildlife Trust to discuss how best to maintain the land for wildlife. One aim is to restore important wildlife corridors on this chalk grassland site which benefits from being a great site for spotting Skylarks.

As a start, 350 blackthorn, elderflower and cherry plum whips have been donated to the project from the Woodland Trust via the Bricks and Bread Sustainable Living Centre. These will be planted by a working party in April with the aim to plug some of the gaps in the existing boundary hedges to provide a better corridor for wildlife.

Further discussions including managing the site to create good quality chalk grassland are underway.
