Transition Towns
The first transition town was created in Totnes, Devon, in 2005, by Rob Hopkins, in response to his concerns about climate change and peak oil. Since then, many others have noted the benefits of being a transitioning town; to both the community and the environment, and it has been adopted in a number of other towns across the world. There are currently 160 transition towns, across 10 countries, with many more hoping to be part of it.
If you would like to know more about transition towns, then check out the official website at: www.transitiontowns.org
You might also like to watch this interview with Rob Hopkins, in which he talks about how the movement began and some of the key principles of Transition Towns such as peak oil and climate change.
I would also highly recommend this talk by Jo Duff of Hawkes Bay Trust in New Zealand (broken in to 4 parts), which is a very good explanation of some of the key issues facing us today and what the Transition movement is about – good for all levels of understanding.
Our Mission
Guildford is a bustling town in the heart of Surrey, with a rich history and a diverse population. It is surrounded by green countryside and small villages and towns, containing much celebrated gardens and properties. There is a strong sense of community, evident in everything from residents’ associations, school and community groups, and famed events such as the Guildford Summer Festival and the Picnic Festival. We also lucky enough to have a Council which is dedicated to improving the local environment.
But, as with many other modern towns today, it still suffers from overcrowding, excessive traffic, pollution, and noise. It’s residents are also facing difficulties within the current economic climate, increasing and unpredictable oil prices (due in part to peak oil), and the threat of climate change.
But there are several groups and individuals working within Guildford to try to combat some of these problems, who are committed to making Guildford an ever better place to live.
Transition Town Guildford (TTG)is one such group; formed in the summer of 2008 by residents of Guildford and the surrounding area.
Our aims are to:
-
Build on the sense of community in Guildford;
-
Help people to reduce their energy and water usage, in order to reduce their bills and their environmental impact;
-
Work with individuals, community, and environmental groups both within and outside of Guildford.
